Languedoc in South West France is know for its climate, history, wine and a cuisine all of its own but the Cevennes National Park north of Montpellier offers great skiing. The Cevennes resorts are not as high or developed as the Pyrenan resorts to the south but do offer some good downhill runs and stunning cross country trails.
The closest Lozere ski station for most is Prat Peyrot on Mount Aigoual which is 1500m above sea level. It is claimed that from the summit of mount Aigoual one can see the Mediterranean on one side and the Atlantic sea on the other. These slopes can be reached in one and half hours by car from Nimes or Montpellier.
Further inland, the landlocked and beautiful mountainous Languedoc department of Lozere has a rich offering of skiing activities at the station Le Bleymard Mont Lozere, which is just two and a half hours from Nimes. Skiing in the Languedoc Roussillon is remarkably cheap compared with the other better known ski resorts in the Alps, but they are well equipped with snow cannons, ski lifts, and various pistes, suitable for both the beginner level and the advanced. They offer downhill skiing, cross country skiing, tobogganing and sledging, country snow hiking, and even treks with dog sleighs for the very fit. The station at Mas de la Barque specialises in cross country. Different types of accommodation are available for those who wish to stay the weekend or indeed the week, at reasonable prices.
